What's New?
We're forming a new group in Denver, Colorado for people who suffer from public speaking anxiety. We'll be meeting in a centrally located Denver library branch meeting room.
If you're not in the Denver area, Dave can still help you deal with your public speaking anxiety and help you develop your skills through Skype video calling.
Why are public speaking skills important?
Public speaking skills aren't just necessary at school and work. Communication skills are important in every aspect of your life. The ability to present your ideas clearly, effectively, and confidently can mean the difference between being stuck in a job you don't like and getting promoted. The skills you'll learn through public speaking will help you become a better conversationalist, which can help your social life. It can make you more outgoing and you may have a more fulfilling life as a result.
How it works
- You'll meet with Dave, who will talk to you about your public speaking anxiety and the two of you will access your problem together. You can do this in person or through Skype video calling. This initial consultation usually lasts about a half-hour.
- At the next session, you'll give a short talk in front of Dave and the two of you will talk about your skill level. You can give your presentations about any topic you choose. Again, this can be done in person or through Skype. If you lack skills or confidence when giving a presentation, it will show up at this stage. You don't have to move on to the next stage of speaking in front of a group until you're ready. It's up to you how quickly you progress. You should have a sense of self-efficacy that you can deliver a presentation successfully before speaking in front of a group. Dave can help you with any maladaptive thoughts you might be having while speaking, such as being overly concerned with what the audience thinks about you.
- Now that you have the skills necessary to deliver a presentation, you can practice in front of a small group. Don't worry; it will be a completely non-judgmental group. The group will meet once a week so you'll have plenty of opportunities to practice. Each time you do it, it will become easier. Dave will give you pointers on how to deal with anxiety and will be with you every step of the way. You can meet with Dave one-on-one for additional help. He is also available through email.
How much does it cost?
The initial consultation is $10 for one half-hour. One-on-one sessions are $40 for 50 minutes. Public speaking groups are only $10 each and usually last from one to two hours, depending on the size of the group.
